I realise that meditation isn’t for everyone, but has its place and can be a very interesting tool when used as a treatment for anxiety, depression or a racing mind. Give it a try and see what the results are for you. I know it won’t be for everyone, but it’s worth giving it a go and seeing what happens.
The great thing about meditation is that it's something you can do on your own, you don't need any special equipment and don't need to spend a fortune - it's free, just find a quiet corner and give it a go.
There's no need to attach any religious or in any way spiritual significance to the practice, unless you are so inclined. If you do have some kind of a faith that’s fine: if that's the case, feel free to connect with whichever deity, being or energy floats your boat, but there is no pre-requisite to have any kind of spirituality.
Meditation doesn't need any particular formal structure, although a lot of people find a guided meditation extremely helpful. Sometimes just some quiet time can be a great help in calming body and soul.
Start by finding a quiet place, away from others, and somewhere where you won’t be disturbed. Close your eyes and sit or lie quietly. Do your best to zone out of the rest of the world for a few minutes. Listen to your own breathing and slow it down gently, becoming more calm and relaxed as you do so. Focus on your breathing and try to empty your mind of day to day matters.
Even five minutes at a time can shift your mood and create a space to see things from a different perspective.
I’ve included links to texts which might be of further help in this area, or you might wish to look for a local yoga or meditation course near you.
You don't have to sit in the lotus position and chant OMMM! unless you really want to!
Try it when you're stressed and see what a difference it makes.
