The treatments free this syndrome are complex, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach. There is, however, a framework which has worked for me and I believe will work for others.
Unfortunately , there's no quick fix, no shot in the arm which can be taken which will facilitate a dramatic recovery over a short timescale, rather, the treatments are all long term, and involve permanent lifestyle changes. Whilst these changes are not onerous, there is a level of commitment involved.
Conversely, the improvements in well-being, general health and outlook are well worth the investment - even in the short term. Personally, I’ve tried so many different things that I know pretty quickly what’s going to work - I’ve learned to listen to my body - I’m guessing that many of my readers will be like me and have tried a million different things, many will have given up hope of ever finding a solution. There is a solution, however and it does produce results.
Foremost amongst the treatments is the control of stress, easier said than done of course, but given that the syndrome is caused by stress, changes in order to relieve stress, in all its forms are one of the most effective things to do. I always find that I lose weight no matter what I eat on holiday, and I'm convinced this is due to a change in state of mind which leaves day to day worries at the plane door, and enjoys the moment. There is probably significant benefit in taking a sabbatical for a period, if it can be done - unfortunately, I’ve never managed this personally, but I strongly suspect it would be a short-cut to success. Life goes on, however, rare indeed is the woman who can disappear for 6 months, forget about the bills, the family commitments, the life, and many may not want to. The solution needs to work in the real world after all - so let’s be realistic and crack on.
All the treatments centre around reducing as far as possible the spikes in hormone levels which, of course, do all the damage. In particular, keeping insulin levels from spiking makes a tremendous difference to sleep disturbance, anxiety, and in turn, stops other levels from fluctuating. In addition, keeping thyroxine and oestrogen levels up, whilst holding testosterone levels down is also beneficial.
Achieving this requires a concerted effort, but the effects are certainly worth it. The difference in quality of life is significant enough to make a real difference.
